Qualified
Riders To Date
Hilltop Qualifier
by Jake
Sevits
April 6th was just another
Sunday to most people, but to the dedicated
participants of the ATV Amateur Championship, it
was another chance to qualify for the big show. The
track was Hilltop Motocross, located in Mexico, Missouri.
The weather proved to make it a nice day of racing,
as rain the week before had gotten the track
watered and in excellent shape. Lots of changes had
been made to the track, so the playing field had
been leveled for the non-local riders. Practice got
started off at 9:30am sharp. The track is a fun
natural terrain track, set on top of a hill (hence
Hilltop MX). The top of the hill features a rhythm
section, whoops, bermed corners and a wide open
uphill, finish line triple. There are also many
fly-aways leading off the sides of the hill. Wide
open straight aways lead riders back through woods
sections.
Many local Missouri riders took advantage of
the chance to get their foot in the door in their
classes for the final race at Moberly,
MO on August 3rd. The
participants ranged from riders that missed out on
the Moberly, MO and Athens,
TX qualifier to people
that were there and were stricken by mechanical
problems, or were just unable to qualify in their
desired class. In the featured Pro Am class, there
was a heated battle between Jason Robbins, Jeff
Robbins, and Ronnie Higgerson. Jason had already
qualified at the Moberly qualifier, but was there
for the practice. Ronnie and Jeff were both at
Moberly also, but fell victim to unfortunate
incidents. They were in their prime today, however,
and both Jeff and Ronnie, along with Jeremy Gann
and Adam Anderson, added their names to the Pro Am
qualified riders list.
They day had one thing missing,
however, and that was the #2 Suzuki of Dave Frye.
Some of you may know that Dave was injured
seriously at the Pell City, Alabama national. For
more information go to: http://racerxill.com/breakingnews/article/5009/missouri-pro-rider-down.aspx.
A card made by local Pro Am rider Nate Hibbs was
passed around the pits on Sunday for concerned
friends and competitors of Dave to sign and wish
their best.
The ATV Amateur Championship
qualifiers will continue on April 19, in Montezuma Iowa, for those that
have not yet qualified and want to.
ATV Amateur
Championship HLR Motorsports Qualifier
It may have been cold, but that
didnt discourage 108 of the fastest ATV
motocross riders in the area from participating in
the first round of the ATV Amateur Championship.
The first of thirteen qualifiers, the race was held
in Moberly at the HLR
Motorsports Park in Moberly, MO. By the looks of
the weather the week before the race, with the cold
temperatures and wet conditions, anyone would have
guessed the race would have been cancelled.
However, with a lot of hard work of track
preparation put in by Steve Halterman, the track
owner, and a little luck, the track was in prime
condition for a day of races. One worry of the
riders was the track conditions during
practice being so slick because the ground was
frozen said Jason Robbins, Pro Am. However,
after practice, the temperature warmed up enough to
work the track into great shape. Despite concerns,
the track was not too wet, but just moist enough
for the competitors tires to hook up very
efficiently.
Seldom was there a boring
moment on Sunday, as great racing went on all day
long. David Frye took home the money in the Pro Am
class, coming back from a second place win in Moto
one and taking first in Moto two. Tragedy struck
for many of the Pro Am class contenders, including
Jason Robbins who took a nasty spill in the whoops
section. Jeff Robbins also has a bad wreck in that
second moto, and Ronnie Higgerson fell victim to
transmission troubles. However, Frye still had to
work very hard against the other eight riders in
the Pro Am class to take the win. The top four
riders in each class qualified for the championship
race, which will be held back at HLR Motorsports
Park in Moberly on August 2nd and 3rd. Anyone that
feels they have the skill and dedication to qualify
can try their hand in one of the following twelve
qualifiers, held all over the nation. The next race
will be at Athens Motocross Park in Athens, Texas.
